Complete Kit
The following STC number approves installation of Extended wing tips, Whelen recognition lights and the Dorsal Fin Fairing on the following Piper Aircraft:
STC # SA1228CE
PA28-140 (All Aircraft)
PA28-150 (All Aircraft)
PA28-160 (All Aircraft)
PA28-180 Serial number's 28-1 thru 28-7205318)
(The dorsal fin is not applicable if the aircraft already has a Forward Dorsal and an Aft Dorsal already installed.)
STC # SA2490SW
PA28R-180 (All Aircraft)
PA28R-200 (S/N 28R-35001 thru 28R-7135329)
This modification extends the wing span from 30' to 32' 2.5", installs a new extended span Hoerner style wing tip, adds Whelen Recognition Lights and installs the new style dorsal fin fairing to replace the old fin fairing part number 63517-00.
In order for you to install these STC kits your aircraft must have a 12 ft Stabilizer or have stabilizer extensions installed, these extensions are available from The New Piper Aircraft.
The wing modification consists of screw-on fiberglass extended wing tips. The recognition light wire follows existing navigation light wire runs. The navigation light wires are spliced and extended to reach their new location.
The labor time for the complete kit installation is approximately ten to fourteen hours. This time does not include painting.
Before this modification the "fat wing" or Hershey bar wing of the Arrow has a tremendous sink rate in a reduced power situation. This modification provides a gentle sink rate by adding wing area, thereby reducing wing loading. The modification improves the climb rate and cruise speed. Another improvement gained from the wing tip extensions, is the wing tip vortices, which cause a disturbance of the air flow over the aileron during slow flight, are almost completely eliminated. The result is an improved aileron response with improved "roll control power" making cross wind landings much easier. Also many pilots complain of wing heaviness on the short wing Cherokee when fuel is burned from one tank for more than 45 minutes. With the extended wings fuel can normally be used from one tank for an hour and fifteen minutes without noticeable "wing heaviness".
The Whelen Recognition lights provide a "see and be seen" safety benefit. Day or night , other aircraft will be able to see the Cherokee faster and at a greater distance. Also the lights provide a greatly improved night landing visibility. Since the lights are located at the end of each wing tip, the light is focused where the pilot is looking- down the runway, not the center of the nose. The lights also offer the safety of a back-up system in the event the nose landing light fails. The lights are installed at the leading edge of the wing tip and are readily accessible for inspections or light replacement. These lights provide 35,000 candlepower while using only 2.5 amps per light, so they do not drain the power needed elsewhere.
