Bellanca Cowling

1730A

$4,106.00

Introduction

An exciting FAA-PMA approved STC is available for owners of the 1730A series Bellanca Viking.  The Globe Fiberglass Bellanca Viking Lower Cowling and Nose Gear Door modification kit increases speed, improves engine cooling and provides improved esthetics for the Viking, without making any structural changes to the airframe.

What is it?

Designed over a three and a half year period by long time Bellanca Viking owner Dan Holiday of St. Augustine, Florida, our lower cowl and nose gear door modification kit substantially improves the performance of the 1730A series aircraft.

The stock lower cowl of the 1730A Viking has unused interior space, just below the forward end of the engine crankcase, the Viking also lacks a complete set of nose gear doors to cover the retracted nose gear.  Our modification provides a reshaped lower cowling that eliminates the wasted space and reduces the frontal area by ten percent.  The reshaped lower cowling also provides a smoother transition and sleeker profile from the spinner to the nose landing gear wheel well.  The modified lower cowl also includes a left and right nose gear door for improved aerodynamics.

Applicable models

The Bellanca lower cowling and nose gear door modification kit fits the 1730A series Continental IO-520K powered Bellanca Vikings, which do not have the intake below the spinner.  In most cases, the modification will fit the 1969 thru 1975 models.

How it works

The reduced frontal area and sleeker profile of our redesigned lower cowl, combined with the addition of the nose landing gear doors provides a significant reduction in aerodynamic drag as well as improved engine performance.

The nose gear doors included with our lower cowl modification retract up during the last three inches of the nose gear upward movement, with actuators similar to those used on a Cessna Cardinal 177RG.

No cowl flaps are added to the modified lower cowling.  A small opening aft of the closed nose gear doors acts as a venturi accelerating the flow of air through the cowling.  This increased air flow provides increased engine cooling.

How it performs

The Bellanca lower cowling and nose gear door modification kit provides an honest 10 mile per hour speed enhancement, according to Dan Holiday, it's inventor.   This modification is also very effective for overall improved engine cooling.  The addition of a NACA duct on the right side of the modified lower cowling provides increased airflow which decreases the usual high temperature of the number one cylinder.  Improved airflow through the modified cowling decreases engine operating temperatures by 50 degrees Fahrenheit.

Decreased engine operating temperatures translate to decreased wear and tear on the engine and improved engine performance.  The Globe Fiberglass Bellanca Viking lower cowling and nose gear door modification kit is an enhancement that would clearly benefit any 1730A Bellanca Viking owner.
